Government College Women University Faisalabad (GCWUF)was established with the goal of promoting academic excellence and creativity among Pakistani women, particularly those from the Punjab province. Aiming to empower women, who make up 50% of the total population, GCWUF is creating opportunities in fields that are more aligned with female careers and entrepreneurship. The university is located on Shafique Road, Faisalabad. GCWUF has its roots in an intermediate college founded in 1934 and was granted the status of a public research university in 2013. The university will soon operate from two campuses: the main campus and a new one. Currently, more than 8,000 students are enrolled at GCWUF. The university offers a variety of graduate and postgraduate programs, including Ph.D., MS/M.Phil, master’s degrees, and bachelor’s degrees, across four academic faculties. These faculties are staffed by highly qualified, experienced, and skilled mentors. While the university originated as an intermediate college, it continues to offer intermediate-level courses on its premises. The faculties at GCWUF include: Faculty of Management and Administrative Science, Faculty of Science and Technology, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, and Faculty of Islamic and Oriental Learning. Additionally, a new Ph.D. faculty is being introduced under the Interim Placement of Fresh PhDs (IPFP) Program. GCWUF also collaborates with the Office of Research, Innovation, and Commercialization (ORIC) to enhance research initiatives and build stronger ties with industry and civil society. The university is dedicated to supporting underprivileged students with scholarships based on merit and need, ensuring that bright minds have the opportunity to pursue education.
History
The history of Government College Women University Faisalabad (GCWUF) dates back to the pre-partition era when it was originally founded as an intermediate college in 1934. It was later upgraded to a Degree College in 1944. After four decades, the institution introduced postgraduate programs in 1985. Ultimately, on 3rd January 2013, it was granted the status of a degree-awarding university..
Infrastructure
The university is situated in a traditional setting, within the peaceful environment of Madina Town. However, continuous efforts are being made to develop a modern infrastructure, including state-of-the-art academic blocks, updated ICT and computer laboratories, female hostels, a library, an auditorium, and sports grounds. Currently, the university has two libraries: the main library and a postgraduate library, both offering a wide range of books and other reading materials. Four university buses operate on designated routes throughout different areas of the city, with access to this transportation service managed by the university administration. To accommodate students from distant regions, especially those from suburban towns and villages, the campus also features two hostels.
Extra and Co-curricular Activities
Several co-curricular societies are active at the university to foster female talent across various fields. Some of these include the Literary Society, Dramatic Society, Business Society, Scientific Society, and Quiz Society. These activities play a crucial role in the character development of students, helping them cultivate strong ethical and moral values. The students are also trained in the latest technological skills to improve their career prospects. To encourage healthy competition among the university departments and support the participation of the GCWUF Sports Team in the Pakistan Inter Universities Sports Competition, a sports center is operational at the university, under the guidance of the Higher Education Commission Islamabad.
Mission
The mission of GCWUF is to create a dynamic learning environment that fosters interaction, where education is delivered through discussions and the exchange of ideas. The university strives to instill the highest moral and ethical values in its students, shaping them into well-rounded and exemplary women. The close relationship between students and teachers plays a key role in achieving the goal of producing well-educated and cultured women for Pakistan.
