Named after the politician Sardar Abdul Rab Nishtar, Nishtar Medical College is one of the most prestigious educational institutions in Southern Punjab. Established in 1951, it is the third oldest medical college in Pakistan. The college is affiliated with Nishtar Hospital, which has a capacity of 1,800 beds. Nishtar Medical College supports a student body of 1,600. Located just 3 km from the city center, the campus covers 20 acres (81,000 m²) of land, with Nishtar Hospital situated adjacent to the college. Nishtar Hospital is one of the largest hospitals in Pakistan. The entire campus, including the hospital and hostel areas, spans more than 112 acres.
The college was established with both government funding and contributions from local philanthropists. As one of the oldest medical colleges in Pakistan, it has trained multiple generations of doctors and dentists. Located in Multan, one of the hottest areas in Pakistan, the college and hospital feature architecture designed to combat the heat, with high ceilings and large windows being common elements. The campus is spacious, with various academic departments surrounding a central quadrangle, which serves as a large garden for student functions and gatherings. The college also includes an attached hospital, adjacent hostels, and a faculty residential colony. Both the college and hostels reflect traditional Islamic architecture. The buildings added to the campus between the 1960s and early 1980s were designed by A. R. Hye.
In the past, the student body was predominantly male, with many students playing active roles in the country’s political affairs. However, this conservatism has gradually diminished, and today the college has a significant, or rather majority, female population. The first lecture at the college was delivered by Dr. Afzal Rahman, who was the Assistant Professor of Physiology at the time. The founding principal was Dr. Jamal Bhutta. Later, prominent figures like Prof. Hayat Zafar, who significantly upgraded the hospital, took on the role of Principal. Prof. Hayat Zafar went on to lead the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council and the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Pakistan. Other long-serving faculty members included Professor Rauf Khan, Prof. Zafar Haider, and Prof. Gulzar Ahmed.
NMC is a large, bustling hospital with a wide catchment area, offering excellent hands-on experience, particularly in medical and surgical practices. Students from various countries attend the institute. The college holds an impressive ranking both within Pakistan and in the Middle East. Over the years, the institute has produced doctors from a diverse range of countries, including Palestine, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Mauritius, Somalia, Nigeria, Libya, Sudan, the U.A.E., Iraq, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, the Maldives, the U.S., Canada, the U.K., Sri Lanka, and Nepal.
