Karachi Institute Of Power Engineering KINPOE, Karachi
The Karachi Institute of Power Engineering (KINPOE) was established to develop qualified manpower in Nuclear Power Technology. Located adjacent to the Karachi Nuclear Power Plant (KANUPP), KINPOE trains operators and engineers to operate and maintain KANUPP.
KINPOE offers three academic programs: a Master’s in Nuclear Power Engineering, a Postgraduate Training Program, and a Post-Diploma Training Program. Recently, China fully funded and designed a $2.7 billion nuclear reactor to be located at the Karachi. Institute, in line with CPEC, a $46 billion initiative between China and Pakistan.
The Pakistan Institute of Engineering and Applied Sciences affiliates with KINPOE to award Master of Science degree in Nuclear Power. NED University of Engineering and Technology Karachi awarded the Master of Engineering degree in Nuclear Power Engineering through its affiliation with KINPOE.
Initially, KINPOE operated as the Karachi Nuclear Power Training Centre (KNPTC). For the first two decades, KNPTC offered a one-year post-graduate training program for engineers and technicians focused on the operation and maintenance of KANUPP. The academic programs at KNPTC underwent several revisions to place greater emphasis on developing stronger analytical and design skills.
In 1993, KINPOE launched the master’s degree program in nuclear power engineering, a program for which it is uniquely qualified.

Master of Science in Nuclear Power Engineering (MS-NPE)
Designing, constructing, and operating a power plant and its associated facilities require, therefore, knowledge in various areas of science and engineering. In this regard, KINPOE offers the Master of Science in Nuclear Power Engineering to candidates from a wide range of engineering and scientific backgrounds.
Karachi Institute Of Power Engineering KINPOE provides, moreover, a fellowship for all candidates to undertake this course. Upon completing the degree, fellows subsequently may be assigned to work on any project within the organization. The academic program lasts a total of two years, consisting of a seven-week zero semester followed by five 14-week regular semesters.
Selected candidates must be prepared, accordingly, for thorough studies. The MS-NPE degree program, which will be held at KINPOE-College, PIEAS (Karachi), will culminate in successful graduates receiving the PIEAS MS-NPE degree.
Post Graduate Training Program
Engineers need a broad knowledge of various areas of nuclear science and technology for the operation and maintenance of nuclear facilities. To address this, KINPOE offer a comprehensive Post-Graduate Training Program (PGTP), admitting candidates from distinct engineering backgrounds.
The program begins with a six-week orientation, referred to as the zero semester, followed by two regular semesters that include classroom training, lab work, and assessments at each level. After completing the second semester, candidates will experience on-the-job training and plant visits. Overall, the program spans one year.
Post Diploma Training Program
Diploma holders and science graduates trained in basic nuclear technology play a crucial role in ensuring the safe operation and maintenance of nuclear facilities. To meet this need, KINPOE has been offering a one-year Post-Diploma Training Program (PDTP) in Nuclear Power Plant Technology since 1973.
The PDTP training program includes classroom instruction, laboratory experiments, and field visits. Upon successful completion, KINPOE appoints selected candidates as Tech-1. While science graduates are appointed as Scientific Assistant-1. Subsequently, KINPOE assigns them tasks related to the operation or maintenance of nuclear power plants or related installations.
Admission to the program is merit-based, considering academic qualifications, an aptitude test, and an interview. All trainees receive a fellowship of Rs. 12,500 per month and free hostel accommodation for outstation trainees.
